When we decided we were going to Italy, visiting Venice was at the top of my list. I've seen hundreds of pictures of the "floating city," but I wasn't quite prepared for the real beauty of it. Let me just say that our pictures, and any pictures that you see, don't do it justice! In fact, any pictures of Italy can't truly capture its incredible beauty!
Because we had a full schedule, we decided to just make Venice a day trip from our stay in Florence. We took an early train and spent the entire day roaming around. If you've ever heard the phrase "getting lost in Venice," well let me tell you, that's exactly what happens! We could't get any signal while we were there to use Google maps - first world problems, right? We finally caved and purchased a map of Venice, but then couldn't even figure out where we were on the map! Seven educated adults, a map, and a local gelato shop employee later, we managed to figure it out.
The entire day was spent wandering around, eating...a lot, snapping endless pictures, and riding around in a gondola with Justin and some of our friends. We made our way over to the Piazza San Marco, which was packed full of tourists, but it's a must see. Also, you can't visit Venice and NOT go for a gondola ride. It's a bit pricey at $80 for 30 minutes, but it's all part of the experience. Justin was especially excited to see the library from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" - X mark the spot! ;-) Word of advice to anyone traveling to Venice in the future - buy the all day water-taxi pass and don't forget to validate it! It's 20 euro/person, but you can get on and off as many times as needed, so it's worth it!
As for my outfit, I knew it was going to be a long day, so I wanted to keep it simple and comfortable. The morning we left for Venice, I woke up and my ankles/feet were about double their normal size - it was cute! I opted for a simple, nude pair of flip flops from Old Navy (mainly because they were the only shoes that my feet would fit in). I found this maxi dress from ASOS - one of my favorite online shops - and it was perfect for the day. The print and the off-the-shoulder style is a very flirty and feminine look, which I'm loving at the moment.
Venice is incredibly dreamy - one view somehow appearing more beautiful than the last. I would go there again in a heartbeat and it's a definite must see for anyone traveling to Italy!
